If the opening has to be created or widened, a builder installs a steel beam and prepares the opening before the doors are fitted. Depending on width and access, that work typically costs £3,500 to £9,000 or more, plus structural engineer fees and building control charges from your council. The doors are measured once the opening is formed.
You will find bifold doors advertised for much less. The difference is usually in the frame system, the hardware, the weather rating, and what the quote leaves out: removal of the old doors, making good, the threshold, or the building regulations certificate. Bifold doors have more moving parts than any other door, so cheaper systems are the ones most likely to drop, stick or leak after a few winters.
When comparing quotes, check the system name, glass specification, hardware, threshold detail, guarantee terms, and whether the installation will be certified under the Building Regulations. You can check whether any installer is registered on the FENSA website.

A good-quality 3-panel aluminium bifold door up to 2.4m wide typically costs £5,800 to £7,800 supplied and fitted, including VAT. A 5-panel set up to 4m is typically £9,200 to £12,400. Timber and heritage-style doors cost more.
Very low quotes usually mean a budget aluminium system with thicker frames, basic hardware and lower weather ratings, uPVC rather than aluminium, or a price that leaves out removal, making good, the threshold or building regulations certification. Compare the system, glass, hardware and what is included, not just the total.
Supply-only bifold doors typically cost around 65% to 75% of the supplied-and-fitted price. You then pay your own installer, and you take on responsibility for accurate measurements and any building regulations sign-off.
