An honest comparison to help you choose between bifold doors and sliding patio doors for an extension or new garden opening.
Bifold doors and sliding doors both create a large glazed opening onto the garden, but they suit different houses and different ways of living. We supply bifold doors, so this guide also tells you when we think a sliding door would serve you better.
| Bifold doors | Sliding doors | |
|---|---|---|
| Open width | Almost the full opening, with panels stacked at one or both ends | Usually half to two-thirds of the opening, as panels slide behind each other |
| View when closed | A frame every 800mm to 1,000mm | Much larger panes and fewer frames |
| Everyday use | Best with a traffic door for quick access | Slide one panel and step out |
| Space needed | Folded panels stack inside or outside the opening | No swing space needed |
| Maintenance | Hinges, rollers and tracks need occasional cleaning and adjustment | Fewer moving parts |
| Weather in exposed spots | More panel joints to seal | Fewer joints, often better on exposed coastal or hilltop sites |
| Typical price | See our bifold door cost guide | Often similar for the same width, and better value on very wide openings |
Tell us the width of your opening, which way it faces and how you want to use it, and we will give you a straight answer. If sliding doors suit your home better, we will say so. Call 01444 719602 or request a free estimate.
Neither is better for every home. Bifold doors open almost the full width of the opening, which suits summer living and narrower openings. Sliding doors give bigger panes of glass, slimmer sightlines and easier everyday use, which suits wide openings and homes where the view matters most of the year.
For the same width, a good aluminium sliding door is often similar in price to a bifold door, and can be cheaper for very wide openings because it needs fewer panels. Ultra-slim premium sliders cost more.
Both can be very secure with multi-point locking and laminated glass. Sliding doors have fewer panels and fewer locking points to manage, which some people find easier to keep secure day to day.
Sliding doors have fewer moving parts. Bifold doors have hinges, rollers and several panels that need occasional adjustment and track cleaning to keep them running well.
